National Emergency Laparotomy Audit
Welcome to the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit (NELA). The audit is being carried out by the National Institute of Academic Anaesthesia's Health Services Research Centre on behalf of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. It is being run in conjunction with surgical and other key stakeholders. This website is here to provide access to all the latest information regarding NELA, including important dates, documents, meetings and events.
The aim of the audit is to enable the improvement of the quality of care for patients undergoing emergency laparotomy through the provision of high quality comparative data from all providers of emergency laparotomy.

Please keep in mind that NELA is on on-going audit and that the data collection process continues as usual. The current NELA timeline is as follows:
- Year 1 ended 30th November 2014
- Year 2 ended 30th November 2015
- Year 3 began 1st December 2015 (Current)

The First Organisational Audit report of the National Emergency Laparotomy Audit outlining the results, conclusions and recommendations from the audit was published on the 14th May 2014.
The report is available for download from the Reports section of the NELA website.
The audit has been commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) and it is part of the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme (NCAPOP). NELA is on the list of national audits for inclusion in Trusts' Quality Accounts. NELA also partners with the Clinical Effectiveness Unit of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Intensive Care National Audit & Research Centre who provide important methodological and technical input.
The NELA project officially began on the 1st December 2012. NELA aims to look at structure, process and outcome measures for the quality of care received by patients undergoing emergency laparotomy, and will comprise an Organisational Audit and a Patient Audit.
