NIAA Update: February 2021

Welcome to the February 2021 newsletter


We continue to live and work through uncertain and challenging times. Now over a month into our third national lockdown, the vaccine rollout programme is providing some hope and we continue to send our best wishes and gratitude to those working on the frontlines.


NIAA Grants 2021 Round 1 suspended

Given the ongoing and worsening national situation with COVID-19, the NIAA has made the decision to suspend all grants activity relating to 2021 Round 1, which will not open for applications. Please click here for more information on this notice.


VACANCY: UK POMCTN Director

The UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network (POMCTN) was established in 2015 as a national network to deliver world-class multi-centre clinical trials in anaesthesia and perioperative medicine.

The POMCTN is now recruiting a new Director as Prof Rupert Pearse's term as founding Director nears its end. This role will include overseeing the successful delivery of all network-led clinical trials, working closely with chief investigators to ensure that trials are well supported, as well as leading and developing the strategy of the Network.

VACANCY: HSRC DIrector

The Health Services Research Centre (HSRC) is the national centre of excellence for health services research in anaesthesia and associated specialties. Its purpose is to define, evaluate and improve quality in anaesthesia, perioperative care and pain management.

The HSRC is now recruiting a new Director as Prof Ramani Moonesinghe's term ends this year. The post is a three-year fixed term appointment to direct, manage, develop and deliver the aims and objectives of the HSRC in line with its strategic plan, ethos and policies.

New NIHR CRN National Specialty Lead for Anaesthesia

Congratulations to Professor Matt Wilson (Sheffield) who has been confirmed as the NIHR's new national Lead for Anaesthesia, succeeding Professor Mike Grocott. Read more here.


NIHR Associate PI Scheme

The NIHR Clinical Research Network has begun piloting a new scheme within several medical specialties, including one for Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management.

The Associate Principal Investigator (API) Scheme aims to develop junior doctors, nurses and Allied Health Professionals to become the PIs of the future and provides formal recognition of a trainee's engagement in NIHR Portfolio research studies. The scheme has been endorsed by the RCoA. Studies must be open for at least 9 months in order to be part of the scheme and must be recruiting for at least 6 months to accept new applicants. Registration is prospective only.

John Snow Anaesthesia Intercalated Awards 2021

We are pleased to announce that the 2021 John Snow Awards are now open for applications, for intercalating medical students studying on Bachelors or Masters degree programmes.

Awards of £2,000 per student are available from NIAA partners Association of Anaesthetists/Anaesthesia, British Journal of Anaesthesia/Royal College of Anaesthetists, and the Neuro Anaesthesia & Critical Care Society.

PQIP Poster Prize at Anaesthesia 2021

There will be a PQIP Poster Prize at this year's RCoA Anaesthesia conference, which is taking place virtually on 18-20 May 2021.

This year, due to the ongoing impact Covid-19 is having on research and Quality Improvement projects, the competition has been expanded to include 2 categories:

1. A quality improvement or research project using PQIP data and/or that addresses one of PQIP's top five priorities for 2019/20
2. A project which focused on changing perioperative care services or pathways in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

All collaborating healthcare professionals or student healthcare professionals are invited to submit a poster, the deadline for which is 23.59 Sunday 25 April 2021.
