Welcome to the June newsletter
GAT Annual Scientific Meeting 2017
If you'll be attending this year's GAT trainee conference we will see you there, as the NIAA will be hosting an exhibition stand on Wednesday 5th and Thursday 6th July. Come and see us to discuss research, funding, academic training and to say hello!
We are also running a series of drop-in sessions on Thursday 6th July for research-active (or research-interested) trainees who are looking for external reviews of their ideas, assistance with ethics applications, assistance with grant applications, or sourcing formal external academic supervision or appraisal. These sessions are now fully booked, however the NIAA Trainee Representatives Annemarie and Andrew will be on hand for informal chats so do grab them when you can!

RCoA 25: ARIES Talks
Throughout 2017 the Royal College of Anaesthetists is celebrating 25 years since gaining its Royal Charter with a programme of events and activities to highlight the achievements of the College and the specialty. This includes a series of free, short, informative and entertaining talks called ARIES (Anaesthesia Research Innovation Education Scientific) from high profile speakers on areas of relevance to anaesthesia, critical care and pain medicine.
The next talk in the series is taking place at the RCoA on Monday 10th July from 6pm. The programme features Prof Mike Grocott - NIHR CRN National Specialty Lead for Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain, who will be speaking about his experiences on Everest - 10 years on and also scheduled to talk is Dr Jen Warren who will be speaking on Wheelchair Anaesthetics: from Trauma to Triumph at the Invictus Games. Open for applications: POM CTN Chief Investigator scheme
The UK Perioperative Medicine Clinical Trials Network is encouraging applications for the Chief Investigator mentoring scheme.
The scheme is intended to provide training and mentorship for a small number of talented individuals who wish to lead their own clinical trials in perioperative medicine, and applicants will be existing members of the POM CTN Local or Principal Investigator schemes with a proven track record of recruitment to clinical trials.

Applications are welcomed from individuals of any clinical background of relevance to perioperative medicine. Those who would like to discuss the position informally before applying should contact the CTN.

Bookings are now open for the Clinical Trials Network's 2nd Autumn meeting. As well as lectures from distinguished health care leaders, delegates will also have the opportunity to provide and receive constructive feedback on future studies and network with fellow researchers across the UK.
The delegate rate is £45, and there is a 25% discount available for medical students and AHPs. 5 CPD credits are available. If you would like submit a study for discussion at the meeting please visit the CTN Adoption Process page.

RCoA Grants & Prizes
If you've got an idea for a small anaesthesia-related research project and need funding to get you started, the NIAA facilitates several small grants funded by the RCoA which could help. The following awards are currently open for applications:
Ernest Leach Research Fund
Up to £2,500 available for research purposes
Sargant Fund
Up to £2,500 available for education and research purposes
Belfast Fund
Up to £600 available for educational purposes

RCoA Payne Stafford Tan - An Award for Clinical Excellence
The aim of this Award is to mark excellence in clinical practice, teaching or research in anaesthesia, critical care or pain management. It is open to any Fellow or Member of the College, and comprises a grant (to a maximum of £1,000) to be used for educational purposes.
Closing date: Friday 1 September 2017. Full criteria and how to apply are available here.
RCoA Maurice P Hudson Prize
This prize will be awarded to the anaesthetic or intensive care trainee who is the principal author of the best paper relating to the management of acutely ill patients published, or accepted for publication, in a recent peer reviewed journal. A prize of £500 is available this year.

RCoA Macintosh Professorship
Recipients of this award will have a national or international reputation in their field. Their curriculum vitae will be consistent with an individual who is performing at, or is on the cusp of, professorial level through research, innovation, and leadership. Those who show equivalent excellence in teaching and education will also be eligible for the award.
Recipients are required to give a keynote lecture at a meeting organised by the Royal College of Anaesthetists or its associated Faculties, other related organisations and specialist societies. The lecture is commemorated by the presentation of a certificate. Applications are open to Fellows and Members of the College and other clinicians and scientists involved in anaesthesia, critical care and pain management within the UK. Applications are considered by the NIAA Board.

NIAA 2017 Round 1 grant results
The NIAA Grants Committee met on Tuesday 27th June to discuss the most recent round of funding applications. 37 submissions were received in to 9 categories for a total requested sum of £1,516,015 and 17 of these were supported to a total of £664,989. Abstracts for the successful projects will be made available on the NIAA website in the coming weeks.
The 2017 grants Round 1 was notable as it was Prof David Lambert's last round in leading the process as the NIAA Grants Officer, a post he has held since the NIAA was set up in 2008. The role is now filled by Dr Matt Wilson (Sheffield) who will lead from now on and will Chair the 2017 Round 2 grant committee later in the year with support from Prof Lambert, who will officially step down in December.
John Snow Award 2017 winners
