NELA QI Videos

NELA has produced a series of Quality Improvement videos to help trusts get the most out of their NELA data.

These videos are also available as a playlist on the Royal College of Anaesthetists' YouTube channel. Why not try these QI strategies in your trust and contact us with your results?

Using Run Charts

Run charts are a simple, effective improvement tool to display and understand your NELA data and your team's performance over time. This short animation is an introduction to the what, why and how of using run charts to help you use your NELA data and the NELA dashboard to drive local improvement in emergency laparotomy care.

Improving Data Feedback

NELA data collection is most effective for local improvement if we feedback our data following a few simple rules. How can you use your local NELA data and feed it back more effectively? This animation describes how we can use our NELA data to drive local improvement, using simple effective principles for data feedback.

Using NELA Data to improve: Understanding the system

This animation describes some simple tools to help you understand the interactions and complexities in your emergency laparotomy pathway.

This new video will help pinpoint where you can make improvements in your pathway, to provide our patients with better quality emergency laparotomy care.

Getting More from NELA Data

This webinar, conducted 22 March 2021, provides an overview of how to use local NELA data for quality improvement, including an overview of how to use and interpret the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) mortality charts. It also provides an overview of how to access NELA data for research.

The Impact of COVID-19 on Emergency Laparotomy in England and Wales

This webinar, conducted 19 April 2021, discusses the impact of the global pandemic on patients having emergency laparotomy, and importantly, how we can as an MDT build on what we have learnt over the last year to think differently about what makes high quality care for this high risk group of patients.

Care of the Elderly Webinar

This webinar, conducted on 24 June 2021, provides an overview of frailty, what the NELA data show us about the older surgical patient undergoing emergency laparotomy, an overview of the ELF/ELF2 studies, and presents a case study for how to implement liaison services locally.

Emergency Laparotomy and Sepsis

NELA and other national reports from the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, the Royal College of Surgeons and NCEPOD have highlighted the importance of the rapid recognition and treatment of sepsis to reduce avoidable morbidity and mortality in emergency general surgery. This webinar outlines the national picture of the epidemiology of sepsis, and the treatment and outcomes of patients with sepsis captured in the NELA data. We also outline the evidence behind the strategies of timely intervention, with antibiotics and source control.

NELA Year 7 Report Launch

This webinar outlines the findings of the NELA 7th annual report, describing the national picture of emergency laparotomy care between December 2019 and December 2020.

Patient Pathways

This webinar features presentations from some of NELA's top performing trusts. They describe key elements of their pathway for Emergency Laparotomy patients, focusing on those that have made the most significant difference in patient outcomes.

Using Your NELA Data

This webinar, conducted on 11 October 2022, provides an overview of how to use local NELA data for quality improvement, including an overview of how to use and interpret the exponentially weighted moving average (EWMA) mortality charts. It is an update to our previous webinar from 22 March 2021 on a similar topic.

NELA Year 10 Launch

This webinar, conducted on 22 March 2023, presents an overview of the key results from the NELA Year 8 (Dec 2020 - Nov 2021) report, setting the stage for upcoming changes.
